October is breast cancer awareness month

Transforming awareness in to action

BreastScreen WA uses breast cancer awareness month as a platform to remind women to book in for their free screening mammogram. With appointment times available from early morning to late evening and on Saturday mornings, BreastScreen WA is catering for the busy women of today.

BreastScreen WA recently celebrated the milestone of reaching two million screening mammograms. The service commenced in 1989 and reached 1 million screens in 2008, after 19 years. It has taken only 9 years to reach the second million.

Dr Liz Wylie, Medical Director of BreastScreen WA acknowledged the 2 millionth screen saying, “This milestone represents a significant benefit to Western Australian women. One in eight women in Australia will develop breast cancer in their lifetime, so it is important that women aged 50-74 years have a screening mammogram.”

“A free screening mammogram is one of the best things that women can do to look after their health and only takes 20 minutes. The best way to reduce the number of deaths from the disease is to detect and treat breast cancer as early as possible.”

BreastScreen WA’s 2 millionth client, Mrs Nada Lubay from Rockingham, has had 10 screening episodes with BreastScreen WA over the years.

“I have always felt comfortable in the hands of BreastScreen WA’s staff. The staff are calm, professional and informative which helps to relax you”, Mrs Lubay said.

BSWA provides free breast screening mammograms to WA women aged 40 years and over, but specifically targets women aged 50-74 years who are invited to attend a screening mammogram appointment every two years.

Two exciting upcoming BSWA events, as part of Australia’s Breast Cancer Awareness month in October, are the Pink Ribbon Breakfast at Fraser’s on Monday 24 October, with the guest speaker being Sabrina Hahn, gardener extraordinaire and Picnic in the Park, a gathering of Aboriginal women in Kings Park on Tuesday 25 October.
