Charity scam alert

Charity scam alert

WARNING – recent reports of attempts to deceive people into believing they were donating to BreastScreen WA.

BreastScreen WA wishes to warn Western Australian residents about a scam using door to door and shopping centre canvassers to try to deceive people into signing up to direct debits to a site masquerading as BreastScreen WA. There have been recent reports of person(s) using the BreastScreen name targeting the WA community and canvassing for donations. The reported incidents have occurred in Armadale and Thornlie over the last fortnight.

BreastScreen WA is a free mammogram service and is not a charity. In Western Australia, the state wide program is under the jurisdiction of the North Metropolitan Health Service of the Health Department of Western Australia, funded by Commonwealth and State Governments and never canvasses for donations.

This has been reported to Scamnet.  If you are concerned about whether a charity is legitimate check to see if the charity is registered by visiting the Australian charity regulator website.
